getTING to the root of why Veganuary Is worth a GO!

Vegan doesn’t equal boring
Far from it. Some of the most beautiful vegan foods we’ve ever eaten (and made) were a flavour explosion. As the new year is upon us, we’re celebrating new vegginings. And the rationale for a bit of veganism makes entirely more sense than many people realise. If you’re already a vegan, you no doubt know the benefits. But, if not, we urge you to take a few minutes while we give you some concrete reasons to go all-out plant-based this January!
It’s good for the planet
Wherever you stand on going green, eating vegan is possibly the single best thing we can do to help our planet survive the current crisis. And we’re all in favour of prolonging the life of our gorgeous rock. To put it into context – if every person ate vegan once a day for a year, it would reduce pollution caused by the equivalent of 3000 miles driven in a car.
Like they say, ‘every little helps’. So, even if you dip your toe into Veganuary this year, you’ll be helping the generations behind us enjoy all the good stuff we do today.
It’s good for you
Anything that helps for the planet is good for you, right? And with a whopping 43% of us making New Year’s resolutions to improve our fitness or reduce our weight, a dabble in a bit of veganism can help no end. Plant-based foods are rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals. In fact, more superfoods are vegan-friendly than not.
We figure eating vegan is entirely guilt-free. Which mean you can start on that summer holiday body earlier than scheduled, if that’s your thing, or help yourself to a second plate, if that’s more your vibe!
No more caffeine
Don’t panic. We’re not saying you can’t make something hot to drink on those cold January mornings – but there are oodles of energising vegan alternatives to try out. You never know… they could revolutionise your routine! Give a chai or turmeric latte a try for a perfect complement to those New Year health kicks. And if you need some turmeric, pop in and see us – we’ve got loads!
It’s fun to try something new
As a restaurant that cooks original home-recipe Sri Lankan food for fun, we think trying new (and sometimes exotic) things is good for the soul. So, we’re backing this reason to partake in Veganuary to the hilt. Trying new things releases dopamine – we all know how useful that little gem of a chemical is during the dark days of mid-winter. Imagine combining your new post-workout feel-good feeling with a hit of pure plant-based heaven. There’s nothing stopping you now!
We’re here to help
Cooking well-del Sri Lankan vegan food is something we love to do. And we’re here to help all vegans and those taking part in a little digestive spring clean this Veganuary. To celebrate, we’ve launched our 2024 Roots Menu. It has not one, not two, but 21 (TWENTY-ONE!) specialist vegan dishes and sides. Here’s a sneak peek at a few of them:
- Beetroot Mallun – This will beet any salad you’ve ever had. With captivating flavours and tender beetroot on a bed of fluffy rice or alongside a crispy rotti, it’s unbeetable. Okay, we’ll stop with the puns now.
- Pineapple Baduma – A real taste phenomenon. This Sri Lankan classic is crammed with sweet, spicy and tangy flavours that will have you gagging for guilt-free seconds.
- Jackfruit Kotthu – Succulent and tender shredded jackfruit meets the iconic TCT treatment of flavour to make up a vegan curry that will blow your mind.
See, Veganuary really isn’t anything to fear. It’s the root of a perfect start to 2024. If you’re curious to see the entire Veganuary menu, click here, or jump right in and book a table.
From all of us at The Coconut Tree, we wish you a wonderful and happy New Year – Suba Aluth Avuruddak Wewa.
