Our Story

The Coconut Tree is more than just a bar and restaurant. We are a family. Take a group of friends living in London & Cheltenham, relocate everyone to Cheltenham in 2016, complete our team and work to make a dream reality. What simply started off as finding a place to call home above a pub, we sought permission to lease the bar and kitchen of 59 St Paul’s Road, after a renovation project was carried out at nights whilst working full time jobs, The Coconut Tree was born.

We aim to deliver the best Sri Lankan street food, sweet and fiery Cocotails served with warm hospitality, in a stripped back ‘street style’ interior with great tunes.

We’re super chuffed with the level of such support, awards & accolades:

  • The Observer ‘Best Value Eats’ SW 2018 RU

  • Soglos Best Restaurant Bar In Gloucestershire 2018

  • The Cheltenham Awards 2018 Best Bar & Restaurant,

  • Entry into The Lonely Planet 2019/20 and many more

  • Best New Bristol Business, Bristol Life Awards 2019/20

  • The Sunday Observer May 2019 - Jay Rayner Review

We are have opened in new territories where we will aspire to serve the very best Sri Lankan street food and innovative drinks. ‘Cocotails’ are our signature serve, some in ceramics made in Sri Lanka and some with a Sri Lankan spirit made from coconut flower nectar.

We think of our customers and everyone working at The Coconut Tree as our extended family, we want to bring everyone warm Sri Lankan hospitality. You’ll often hear us quoting ‘Everyone is welcome to the table’ - because they are.

The Ox Magazine coined a great phrase we hope you agree…

Don’t expect a napkin…….it’s a roll of paper towels
Do expect an explosion of flavours in our dishes and sweet & fiery Cocotails
Do expect candles in half coconuts
Don’t expect a massive food bill…but do expect to spoil yourself with drinks
Do expect meats, fish & veggies (lots)
Do expect warm Sri Lankan hospitality
Don’t expect the volume to stay down too long
